Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 July 2026
This site is operated by Peter Holgate ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
If you subscribe to The Buccaneer's Broadside: your email address, the date you signed up and confirmed, and the IP address and browser user-agent of the request. The IP and user-agent are kept only to detect and block automated signups, they are not used to profile you.
If you pre-order a book: your name, email address, postal address, phone number (if you give one), and any notes you add to the order.
If you simply browse: we use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. This sets cookies in your browser and sends data to Google, including a randomised identifier and your approximate location. We do not use it to identify you personally.
Why we collect it
- To send you the newsletter you asked for, and nothing else.
- To fulfil a book order and keep you informed about it.
- To keep spam and automated signups off the list.
- To understand which writing is worth doing more of.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.
Double opt-in
Subscribing takes two steps: you enter your email, then click a link in the email we send. Until you click that link, you are not subscribed and will not receive anything. If you never confirm, the record is dropped.
Unsubscribing
Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and your mail client's own one-click unsubscribe works too. Unsubscribing takes effect immediately. You can also email us and we will remove you.
Who else processes your data
- Google Analytics, site usage statistics.
- Google (Gmail/Workspace), sends our email.
- Our own server, located in Germany, which stores the newsletter list and book orders.
How long we keep it
Newsletter records are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Unconfirmed signups are removed automatically. Order details are kept as long as needed to fulfil and account for the order.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Email peter@clockworkleague.com and we will action it.
Cookies
Google Analytics sets cookies to measure visits. You can block them in your browser settings or use Google's opt-out add-on; the site works normally either way. We set no advertising cookies.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top.
